Brushing your cat daily is most effective. This is because plaque (bacterial film) builds up again within a few hours after eating. The key is not to use human toothpaste, but to use a product specifically designed for pets, and to get them used to it very slowly at first.

Why brush every day?

How to begin toothbrushing

  1. Tools: A soft pet-specific toothbrush (a finger brush will work) and pet-friendly toothpaste. No human toothpaste (can be harmful to cats).
  2. Introduction: Start by touching around the mouth. Let your cat taste pet toothpaste, then briefly brush a few front teeth before gradually expanding.
  3. Method: Brush gently along the gum line. A brief daily session is more useful than one occasional long session.
  4. Reward: End with praise or a treat to build a positive association.

If toothbrushing is difficult

  • It is helpful to use dental treats, feed, and products that bear the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Commission) certification mark.
  • These products support oral care but do not completely replace toothbrushing.
  • Check your cat's mouth regularly so you can notice changes in tartar or the gums early.
